Missouri License Plate Renewal

What Is License Plate Renewal in Missouri?

License plate renewal in Missouri extends the existing vehicle registration and issues a new registration card and sticker. The license plate number remains the same. The Missouri Department of Revenue (DOR) administers all renewals.

  • Owners choose a one-year or two-year registration cycle. A two-year registration is available when an even model year vehicle is renewed in an even calendar year, or an odd model year is renewed in an odd year (DOR Biennial Registrations Page).
  • Renewal is not a title transaction. A change of ownership requires a separate title application within 30 days of purchase at a Missouri license office.
  • Passenger cars, trucks, motorcycles, recreational vehicles, and trailers are renewed through the same system. Trailers may also choose a three-year or permanent registration.

When Do You Need To Renew Your Missouri License Plate?

The DOR sends a renewal notice before the expiration month. Registration expires on the last day of that month, and the early renewal window opens six months before expiration.

  • Missouri does not provide a grace period. A fixed $5 penalty applies the day after the expiration date.
  • Online renewal remains available for 90 days after expiration. After that, renewal must be done at a license office.
  • A safety inspection is required every two years at an authorized Missouri inspection station if the vehicle is no more than 10 model years old and has less than 150,000 miles. The certificate must be no older than 60 days at the time of renewal.
  • Vehicles registered in the City of St. Louis, St. Louis County, St. Charles County, or Jefferson County also require an emissions inspection through the Gateway Vehicle Inspection Program, following the same biennial schedule.

How To Renew Your License Plate in Missouri

Before renewing, gather your current insurance, personal property tax receipt (or non-assessment statement) for the previous year, and safety or emissions inspection certificate, if applicable. The renewal notice from the DOR includes requirements specific to your vehicle.

  • In Person: Visit any Missouri license office with your renewal notice (or Form 184), tax receipt, insurance, and inspection certificate. Payment is accepted in cash, check, or card.
  • Online: Renew at MORE Online Renewal if your county transmits personal property tax data electronically. A convenience fee of 2.0% plus $0.25 applies to card payments. The DOR issues a temporary registration receipt valid for 30 days while new stickers are mailed.
  • By Phone: Call 573-751-1957, Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Some local license offices also accept phone renewals.
  • By Mail: Follow the instructions in the renewal notice and send documents along with a check or money order to the address listed on the form.

How Much Is License Plate Renewal in Missouri?

Missouri sets registration fees by vehicle class, with an additional processing fee of $9 for each one-year renewal (or $18 for two-year). The base registration is moderate; personal property tax paid separately to the county is a larger variable for most owners.

  • Passenger cars with 72 horsepower and above pay $51.25 per year plus $9 processing. Lower horsepower classes decrease: 60 to 71 hp – $45.25, and under 12 hp (including electric and low-speed vehicles) – $18.25 (DOR Motor Vehicle Fees).
  • Two-wheeled motorcycles renew for $8.75 plus $9 processing. Three-wheeled models pay $10.25 plus processing.
  • Trailers: $7.50 per year plus $9 processing, or $22.50 for three years, or $52.50 for a permanent plate.
  • Safety inspection fees are $12, paid directly to the inspection station. Emissions inspections have a separate fee, paid at the Gateway VIP station.
  • Late renewal adds a fixed $5 penalty noted in the timing section.
  • Personalized plate fees and contributions for specialty plates add to the base fee at renewal. Amounts vary by plate type; check the DOR Renewal Requirements Inquiry for your specific vehicle.

Can I Renew My License Plate Online in Missouri?

The DOR accepts online renewals for most passenger cars, trucks, motorcycles, and trailers through MORE Online Renewal. Eligibility requires your county collector to transmit personal property tax data electronically to the DOR. A list of participating counties is posted on the portal. The system accepts debit and credit cards with a convenience fee of 2.0% plus $0.25.

Upon completing an online renewal, the DOR provides a temporary registration receipt valid for 30 days. New stickers and the registration card are mailed. If the portal cannot process your renewal, visit any Missouri license office or call 573-751-1957 for phone renewal.

  • Mail-in renewal requires a completed renewal notice, property tax receipt, copy of insurance card, inspection certificate if applicable, and a check or money order sent to the address listed in the notice.

If Missouri can process your renewal online, it is the quickest route and avoids a trip to the license office; the office and phone lines handle what the portal cannot.
